When it comes to capturing those precious first days of your newborn’s life, one of the biggest decisions parents face is where to have their photos taken. As a Greer newborn photographer serving the whole Upstate that has been photographing families for over 11 years, I often get asked: Should we do an in-home session or visit a studio? Both options offer beautiful results, but each comes with its own unique benefits.

In this post, I’ll help you weigh the pros and cons of in-home versus studio newborn photography, so you can choose the experience that feels right for your family.

The Comfort of an In-Home Newborn Session

Many Greer families love in-home sessions because they provide a familiar, relaxed environment for both baby and parents. The comfort of your own space means less disruption for your newborn and a more natural flow to the session. There’s no need to pack up the baby or worry about traveling—everything happens on your home turf.

In-home sessions allow for lifestyle-style images that capture your family’s everyday moments and surroundings. From cuddles in your favorite chair to quiet moments in the nursery, these photos become deeply personal and meaningful.

Many of my families spend a lot of time planning and designing their baby’s nursery. In-home sessions allow up to include the space you lovingly prepared for your child and include it as a part of his or her story.

Another perk of in-home sessions is that we can easily include your pet! I completely understand that your dog is a part of your family. When we do your newborn session in your home, it is very easy to include your dog or dogs in the portraits.

The con? Is your nursery photo ready? Sometimes parent may not feel like their home is photo ready and this can cause unneeded stress.

The Controlled Environment of a Studio Session

On the other hand, studio sessions offer a space designed specifically for photography and can relieve the stress of you having to prepare a space for photos. The controlled setting allows for consistent lighting and fewer distractions, making it easier to focus on the features of your newborn and your family connections.

I utilize a few studios in the Greer and Greenville area for studio newborn sessions. They all offer a crisp, clean backdrop in all white spaces. We use stools, benches, or settees for different posing options, but overall I conduct these sessions just as I would an in-home session. The main difference is that your backdrop is completely neutral, allowing for all the focus to be on the subjects of the portrait.

The con? Studio sessions are less personalized than in-home sessions and typically can’t include your pets.

Which Option Is Right for You?

Choosing between an in-home or studio newborn session really comes down to what’s most important for your family.

  • If you value comfort, convenience, and capturing natural moments in your own environment, an in-home session is a wonderful choice.
  • If you’re looking for polished, traditional portraits with a white backdrop, a studio session may be the better fit.
