If you’re expecting a baby, you’re probably juggling a million decisions — and booking newborn photos might feel like something you can put off. As a Greenville newborn photographer, one of the most common questions I hear is, “When should we actually book our newborn session?”

The short answer? Earlier than you think.
The good news is that booking early doesn’t mean your session has to feel rushed or stressful. Here’s everything you need to know so you can plan confidently and enjoy the experience.

The Ideal Time to Book Your Newborn Photographer

The best time to book your newborn session is at the beginning of your second trimester. Most families feel comfortable and ready to begin sharing their news around this point in pregnancy.

Booking early allows you to:

  • Secure availability around your due date
  • Plan your session thoughtfully instead of scrambling after baby arrives
  • Have peace of mind knowing this is already taken care of
  • Be able to decide and plan if you want maternity photos as a part of your photography package

Why Newborn Sessions Are Scheduled Around Due Dates

Newborn photography is unique because babies don’t arrive on a schedule. As a Greenville newborn photographer, I only take a limited number of newborn sessions each month so I can remain flexible when babies arrive. That means dates can fill quickly and why early booking is key.

When you book your session, I pencil you in based on your due date, not a specific day. Once your baby arrives, you simply let me know, and we finalize your session date based on how you and your baby are feeling.

This approach allows for flexibility while still ensuring you have a spot reserved.

When Do Newborn Photos Typically Take Place?

Most newborn sessions take place within the first 7–21 days after birth. During this window, babies tend to be sleepier which allows for a relaxed, baby-led session.

That said, beautiful newborn photos can absolutely be created outside of this window as well — especially with a more lifestyle-focused, in-home approach. If your baby is a little older, please don’t assume it’s “too late.”

What If My Baby Arrives Early or Late?

This is one of the biggest worries parents have — and it’s exactly why booking early is so helpful.

Because your session is scheduled around your due date and not a fixed day, there’s built-in flexibility. Whether your baby arrives early, late, or right on time, we’ll adjust the session date accordingly.

You don’t need to have everything figured out ahead of time — that’s part of the full-service experience.

Can I Book After My Baby Is Born?

Yes — but availability can be limited.

If you reach out after your baby has arrived, I’ll always do my best to fit you in. However, because newborn sessions are limited each month, booking during pregnancy is the best way to guarantee availability.

If you’re reading this and your baby is already here, don’t hesitate to reach out. Even if your baby is a few weeks old, we can still create meaningful, beautiful images.

Why Booking Early Creates a Better Experience

Booking your newborn session ahead of time allows us to have time to plan accordingly. We can talk through your preferences, concerns, and vision for your session. This includes choices such as in-home vs studio, wardrobe styling, and avoiding last minute stress! Early booking allows for a calm, unrushed experience once your baby arrives.

Planning early also allows your to enjoy the full service experience. We can talk through how you want to enjoy your images after the session. This allows us to plan for and design artwork intentionally that will truly reflect your family.

For many families, knowing their newborn photos are already scheduled brings a surprising amount of peace during those final weeks of pregnancy.
